The genetic fallacy is committed when an claim is either accepted or rejected because of its source, rather than its merit.

Examples

  • Eugenics was pioneered in Germany during the war. Therefore eugenics is a bad thing.

Explanation

Saying that something should not be used now because it had bad connotations in the past is not a sound argument.
