Definition

An appeal to fear is the attempt to use fear instead of logic to support a conclusion. The conclusion is often unrelated to the fear tactic and the conclusion is usually presented as the only alternative.

Examples

  • "If you don't believe in god then you will burn in hell for all eternity."
  • "Terrorists caused X to happen. We have to go to war with country Y to prevent terrorism."
