Voltaire
Voltaire was a cool cat. He wrote some books, delved into philosophy and was a stud all his life.
One of his most famous works, Candide, deals with the idiocy of pointless optimism, and the futility of romanticizing life when it can be stripped away in the blink of an eye.
He supported free thought through his anti-church stance in an era when that made him very unpopular. One of the themes of Candide is freewill. Candide has been taught by one Doctor Pangloss that this is the best of all possible worlds and all actions, malevolent or benign result in the world being the best it could possibly be, bringing up the question: If it will be the best world regardless of my actions, why act at all?
